Introduction to Differentiation and Integration

We know that Mathematics is one of the important subjects that each student has to learn. Mathematics is not only helpful in academics; it is useful in many real-life scenarios also. It is a subject which is incredibly important for most of their lives. Mathematics is not about just numbers; it is all about patterns. Many fields like designing, engineering, marketing, finance require good Math skills.

In Mathematics, we will come across many concepts. All the ideas are equally important from the basic concept of counting to the complex concepts like differentiation and integration in calculus. Here, we are going to discuss the introduction of differentiation and integration along with its applications.

Generally, calculus can be broadly classified into two types, namely:

  • Differential Calculus - It deals with finding the changes in the given function. It breaks the functions into small pieces to determine its changes.

  • Integral calculus - It integrates the smaller functions to find the whole.

Differentiation

Differentiation is the process of determining the derivative of a function. The fundamental concept of differentiation is finding the derivative; In other words, differentiation is a method of finding the function’s slope or change rate. It means that the rate at which the output value will change for the input value. The derivatives generally define the slope of the given function at any point. It is the measurement for the steepness of the graph function. The derivative of the function is generally represented using the notation “dy/dx”.

For example, if f(x) is the given function, the derivative is represented by f’(x) = dy/dx. It represents the derivative of the variable y with respect to the variable x. Here “x” is the independent variable, and “y” is the dependent variable.

Applications:

  • It helps to calculate the temperature change.

  • It helps to determine profit and loss.

  • It is used to derive many physics equations.

  • It is helpful to calculate speed and distance.

Integration

Integration is the reverse process of differentiation. It is used to find the volume, area and central points. The area under the curve of the given function can be easily computed using integration. The key concept involved in the integration is the “Integral”. Finding integral is the reverse process of finding the derivative. It is the collection of many small parts to make it whole. The symbol “∫” represents the integral. The integral can be classified into:

Definite Integral: If the integral has upper and lower bounds, then it is known as definite integral

Indefinite Integral: If the integral is not specified with upper and lower bounds, it is indefinite integral.

There are different methods of integrations, which helps to find the integral of a function. Some of the methods are integration by substitution, integration by parts, integration by partial fraction, etc.

Applications:

  • Integration is used to find the area under the curve, and area between two curves.

  • It is used to find kinetic energy, the centre of mass, distance, velocity, etc.

  • It helps to find the average value of a function.

Significance of Arithmetic Operations in Mathematics

Arithmetic operations is one of the important concepts in mathematics as this includes the basic arithmetic operations such as addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. These operations are very important in order to perform calculations and also in algebra. Applications of arithmetic operations are not only limited to mathematics but also extends to many real life applications. These operations are used in some other ways to break down every equation, graph, and an enormous amount of other elements.

Most people assume that math is a language, and the four basic operations of maths such as addition subtraction, multiplication, and division are its characters. The attributes are basically, proven methods to employ the techniques of arithmetic into certain specific situations. We can regularly ascertain those situations within an expression or equation, for example while writing the multiplication table. Some operations are much more elementary and standard than others. However, arithmetic operations have their own significance in mathematics. All these four operations form the basic curriculum of maths for the elementary students once they learn the natural numbers.

Let us have a look at the scenarios where we use the basic operations of mathematics. Whenever we want to get the sum of the quantities, we can use the addition technique. For example, a group of students has a different number of sweets, the total number of sweets that the students contain can be found by adding the numbers. Similarly, if there is a requirement to see the difference, we can use the subtraction technique.

Students are taught to sum numbers, i.e. counting numbers that means numbers in the decimal system in primary education, starting with one digit numbers and then tackling more complex problems. Typically, children first master numbers as this is a fundamental and essential task. When a student is given a problem and asks that two elements and three elements be combined, different students will perform this operation differently. Primary class students mould the situation with physical objects, often fingers or a picture, and then perform count to get the total. We can apply addition to many other elements other than numbers, and they include expressions or polynomials, equations, objects, functions and so on.

Multiplication is often considered when we deal with the situations that involve repeated addition of the same numbers, lots of, groups of objects. Here, we use the words multiply, number of times, product, and so on. We must use the vocabulary related to multiplication and division correctly. Children must also be exposed to various terms that apply in multiplication and division situations and that the words are used correctly. Often it is advisable to maintain one name more than others when introducing concepts such as finding the multiples of a number, factors of a number and so on.

The division is an operation used to form the equal number of portions from the given amount. This is very important when dealing with the shares and partnership related problems in maths and real-life situations. Apart from these applications, many cases can be seen where we use arithmetic operations knowingly and unknowingly. Without these basic operations of maths, we cannot perform any tractions in our daily existence.

Introduction to Sequence and Series

In Mathematics, sequence and series are important concepts, and it has a wide range of applications in the field of Physics, Finance, Statistics. We have studied different types of numbers, such as even numbers, odd numbers, etc. The list of even and odd numbers follows a specific sequence. For instance, the list of even numbers is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc. We can say it as a sequence with the common difference of 2. Here, we are going to discuss the sequence and series and their types.

Sequence

The sequence is defined as an arrangement of any object or the set of numbers, which follows specific rules. In other words, the sequence is defined as a list of numbers in a particular order. The sequence is also known as “Progression”. The number of elements present in the sequence is called the length of the sequence. The sequence may be finite or infinite. If the difference between two consecutive numbers in the sequence is positive, the sequence follows an ascending order. If the difference between two consecutive numbers is negative, the sequence follows a descending order.

For example, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 is a sequence.

Here, the sequence is finite with 5 terms and each term is increased by 2. Hence, the common difference is 2.

Series

The sum of the terms present in the sequence is called a series. The series may also be finite or infinite, depending on the type of sequence. If a sequence is finite, then a series is also a finite series. If the given sequence is infinite, then the series is infinite.

Consider the finite sequence, 4, 8, 12, 16; then the finite series is represented by 4+8+12+16.

For example, if the sequence is infinite, say 1, 2, 3, …., then the infinite series is given by 1+2+3+...

Classification of Sequence and Series

The four important types of sequences are AP, GP, HP, and Fibonacci number. Now, let us discuss in brief about these different types of sequences.

Arithmetic Sequence:

The arithmetic sequence, also called arithmetic progression is defined as a list of numbers, in which the difference between 2 continuous numbers is constant. For example, 3, 5, 7, 9 is an arithmetic sequence with the common difference of 2. (i.e.) the difference between two consecutive numbers is 2.

Geometric Sequence:

In GP, every element in the list of numbers is determined by multiplying the previous term using the constant value. Here the constant value is called the common ratio. For example, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 is a geometric sequence, such that every term is obtained by multiplying the previous term by 2.

Harmonic Sequence:

The harmonic sequence is the reciprocal of the arithmetic sequence. In general, if a, b, c, d is an arithmetic sequence, then the harmonic sequence is represented by 1/a, 1/b, 1/c, 1/d.

Fibonacci Numbers:

The Fibonacci numbers, also known as the Fibonacci sequence is a list of numbers in which the next number is found by adding the two leading numbers. For example, the sequence of Fibonacci numbers is given by 5, 8, 13, 21, … and so on.
